Jacaranda

SATB
For Sebastian Charlesworth and the New Sussex Singers

Do you recall the words you never said,
In that far city? The jacaranda was in bloom,
But we were strangers then, in thrall
To our own liberty. There on the street,
Another world trudged by in robes or rags,
Mere happenchance to our frail certainty.

Now reckless spring was whispering
Its ancient promises, no hint of pangs to come:
We were enmeshed in our own immortality,
Not choosing what we chose?? Was it a game?
And were there rules? Do songbirds sing?
The jacaranda was in bloom, that needs no words.
